Houses of the North

“Under the Holy Mother I sayeth unto thee; the rise of a new land can only be brought forth with the sword, and the pain of lesser men.” – The “Red River Prophecy”, words of Nels himself

Houses in the North are generally classified as great, major, minor and petty (not including the marshlands). Most great houses stem from some royal dynasty, including the Nylhus (Ny), the Brendenburgh (Bb), Claudius (C, Korlen (K), Glover (G), Anthoriel (A) and Stokeworth (S) to name a few.

Great Houses are usually kingly, or archducal. Major houses are typically ducal or princely. Minor houses almost always rule counties. Petty houses rule baronies. Notable families are defined as unlanded. This would include merchant lords, high ministers and important scholars.

Note: Post-war, the Marshland Laws are dictated fully by the Archduke, not by the northern king. Furthermore, six families have the distinction of having land within the eternal city itself (marked with an asterisk). These families as well as those with control of a city with a city charter, are called houses while those without are called ‘Familias’. In northern terms, familias correspond to barony and county-level rulers.
